Nazia Andaleeb Preema, prolific and prominent visual artist of Bangladesh got her Master’s in ‘Drawing and Painting’ from University of Dhaka. Preema Nazia Andaleeb, who has been dealing with the issue of women's representation in a poetic manner. In the past Andeleeb's work has been recognized for its innovative approach, distinct technique and lyrical overtones. Her canvases reveal a personal narrative that can be extended to the depiction of a larger situation. Presently her canvases and video installation indicate pleasure and celebration of freedom for women, beauty and the act of mark making all that is essential to create a work of art as an idea forever. Her inspiring endeavor to attain versatility in her work is apparent in her passion for new media, techniques and experimentation. She is one of very few artists in Bangladesh who incorporated new media (performance, video installation and digital art) in Bangladesh art scene. Her creations span over genres, ranging from traditional to digital, in her pursuit to constantly test her limits and made her one of the leading contemporary visual artist’s of today’s generation in the country. Her video and performances are very strong, bold and powerful. Her performances are visual representation of women in our society, which is one of a kind in Bangladesh, and grab the attention of audience here and where ever she performs. Her important video performances are ‘Monajat’ 2008, ‘And Stare Continues’ 2009, ‘Marry my Egg’ 2011, ‘Monologue with Light’ 2012, ‘Aged with cellphones’ 2014, ‘Ico-lation’ 2015 which are widely exhibited and received high acclamation.
She participated in numbers of competitive art residency programs, workshops and has been awarded major international grants for pursuing her works throughout her career since 1999. Preema, the widely traveled artist all over the world, has also received recognitions both domestically and internationally. Along with 16 solo (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, USA, UK, Istanbul, Morocco) expositions in home and abroad she enriched her career by participating 5 Asian Art Biennale, 2 Tashkent Biennale, Istanbul Biennale, Venice International Art Expo to mention along with prestigious art fairs (Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, Tuyup Art Fair/Istanbul, Dhaka Art Summit, Delhi International Art Festival) and symposiums all over the world. Her curatorial projects include several large-scale international expositions (USA, UK, France) featuring art of Bangladesh in global art platforms. Her art works got collected by various museums, cultural institutions, embassies all over. She is also an accomplished vocalist (classical and Tagore) trained in ‘Chhayanawt’ for seven years. She is passionate about inspiring and encouraging upcoming generation and an applauded speaker at educational institutions and electronic media.
She received Anannya Award as recognition of being the outstanding visual artist of Bangladesh for 2014. Honorable Mention award in Chitrakala Category by Jatiyo Mahila Parishod (2009), Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Award in Painting by Bangladesh Charushilpa Parishad (2007/2008), Web Art Award by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET 2006), Royal Overseas League Scholarship UK (2003), Honorable Mention Award, The Group Modern Painting Exhibition, Organized by Alliance Francaise de Dhaka (2003), Media best award in oil painting, Fine Art Department, Dhaka University (2000), 2nd prize of Miniature Painters, Sculptures and Grover’s Society of Washington DC, USA (1999).
She always raises voice for women empowerment and issues. Despite being an acclaimed visual artist of Bangladesh she is also involve in empowering women through initiative WIL(Women in Leadership) to mentor women professionals. She is the president of WIL.
